DROWNING FATALITY

Wm. Cottermole Purdie, . Science Master at Marlborough College, was drowned yesterday afternoon at White’s Bay. There are no details available.
A DAYLIGHT METEOR

A very brilliant meteor was observed at 1.12 p.in. yesterday afternoon in the southern sky. The day was very fine with no clouds, and the meteor was first observed almost due south, about half way between the horizon and zenwith. Jt was a brilliant blue, falling towards the south-south-east. When it nearly reached the horizon, it apparently burst with an incandescent white fire. Spectators were amazed at it being' so visible in the broad daylight.
KILLED BY CAPSIZING DRAY
GISBORNE, February 10,
Michael , O’Grady, 60, single was killed by an overturning dray, whflest woi'king on contract with hie brother at Ivopua railway works this morning. The horse took' fright at a lorry and the dray went over a bank, crushing O’Grady beneath it.

DUNEDIN, February 10
Referring to the distressing circumstances surrounding the drowning of the little hoy, William Robert Kerr, at St. Kilda on February 6th, the coroner, Mr Bnrtholmew, specially commended the act of Arthur Moore, ana Rangi Wootton in swimming out for the boy without a life line.
FISH SHOP BURGLED.
WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 10,
The premises of Marko Ujdur, the Waipukau fish and ’oyster saloon, was burglariously entered early yesterday morning. The cash register was opened and the sum of £8 6s 9d, mostly in threepences and sixpences, was stolen. Access was gained by forcing the, lock of the bak door, after finding entrance by a small window impassable. .
PLUCKY EFFORTS APPLAUDED,
GISBORNE', Feb. 10,
At the inquest on Cecil George Hampton, drowned in Tokomaru Bay, a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned with riders commenting, on the gallant actions of deceased’s two companions, Little and Burnett, especially that of the former, who risking his own life, swam out to Hampton’s assistance.

Miss Agnes Stops arrived by the Niagara from England to organise the Women’s Institute movement in New Zealand.
THE CUP TO CHEER LIPTON. AUCKLAND, Feb. 10.
“Sir Thomas Lipton is determined to win the America Cup this time, and'the. conditions of the race will be more favourable to him,” said Col. Duncan Neill, sailing adviser to Sir Thomas, who arrived by the Niagara. Lipton’s fifth attempt to win the Cup will be made in September.
