MAWSON’S MESSAGE
(Australian Press Association)
(Received this day at 11 a.in.) CANBERRA, February 10. I)r. Maw so n sent a wireless message dated February 7. Since the 3rd the diseoverey has made steady progress under steam and sail. This morning we sighted lvergulen Island. It lias a rugged coastline hacked by a succession of high mountains, the peaks presenting an impressive spectacle as seen from south. We observed a remarkable profession of bird life at Bcnoket group islets, chiefly penguins ol several species, with half a dozen vaiieties of petrels, and many albatrosses all bent on skimming the marine life which is abundant in the sea hereabouts. As darkness closed in, we were thankful to have sighted the dangerous Salamaca Break, which is so lai off shore as to constitute real peril to odd ships traversing these waters. Tomorrow the Discovery should ho safely moored in Jeanne Dare.
