BOSS NEWS.

(From a Correspondent;

Several changes have taken place in the teaching staff of the Ross School. Mr,A. W. Pitt, who filled the position of headmaster for the past 5* years, has been transferred to a similar position at Culverden, where he took up his duties on the re-opening of that school, ill* W. Stirling, of Canterbury, is at present relieving until ,a permanent teacher is appointed, applications for which close with the Canterbury Education Board on the 13th. inst. Miss Flora Thomson, daughter of Mr James Thomson, of Ross, has been appointed as probationer at the local school.

Miss G. Harkness, who filled the

position of teacher at the Mikonui School for several years has accepted an appointment at New Plymouth, and Miss Pedder, of Hokitika, is relieving until a permanent teacher is' appointed. The Ross School Committee decided not to join in with the Schools’ Excursion to Reef ton as they considered the train jouriiejy of 'about eleven hours too strenuous for young children. A vote is being taken at the local schools to decide the locale for their excursion, which will take place in a couple of weeks’ time. Constable Crowley is at present on a month’s holiday leave and his position is being ably filled by Constable Randall of Hokitika.

CYCLING

The Road Cycle Racing over a distance of o miles, which has been run weekly since .December fast is proving very poular, good entries being received for each race. On Saturday evening there were nine starters and a splendid race resulted. The winners were: J. Johnston (Joscjo.) Ist; J. Mason (45sec.) 2nd; E. Mitchell (scr) 3rd. In addition to substantial cash piizes each night, a handsome, gold medal is being awarded to the competitor who gains the most points over a series of six races (Saturday night s race l>eing the 4th.) The points gained so far being as follows: —Erie Mitchell d, F. Heveldt and J. Johnston 4 each. T. Howson and A. Mitchell 3 each, J Mason and A. Hedwig 2 each, P Woods 1.
