The Hokitika Fire Brigade acknowledges with thanks the annual donation of £2 2s from the Hokitika Savings Bank.
The vehicle road to Mahinapua via Ruutapu, is now being completed, and nisi tors may motor to. the railway station. The road into the lake still remains to be done, and will probably be provided for on next year’s estimates. The present access, however, will be appreciated greatly by motorists.
A narrow escape from drowning took place in the Arahura River yesterday afternoon when a young man by the name of Reynolds got into difficulties. It appears that Reynolds, who was in company with other bathers got into deep water and sank, but the timely rescue by one of bis companions averted a tragedy.
Next month, March and April, will be a close season for deer shooting in Westland. Licenses may be obtained at the Post Office. The fee lor the Arahura and Kokatalii district is £2 per rifle, and for Haast region £5 per rifle. In regard to the latter, the right will be given to unalloted blocks on application to the Acclimatisation Society.

Three railwaymen were carrying an iron rail in the Greymouth station yard on Thursday afternoon and the leader gave warning prior to letting it drop. The man in the middle heard and the two tossed the rail from their shoulders but Mr W. R. Senior, who was in the rear did not hear the warning, and when the front end of the iron struck the ground he received a severe jolt on the shoulder. His collar bone was fractured, and he was sent to the Grey Hospital for treatment.

The C. and D. Line steamer, Port Brisbane, due at Lyttelton on Saturday last, from London, is bringing Sumner’s new lifeboat. The lifeboat is of the latest design, and was built by White and Co., Cowes, Isle of Wight, makes of the old Rescue. The new boat, which is 30ft. in length, has been named Rescue No. 2, and has six oars and an auxiliary Parsons 24 horsepower marine erigine. She is fitted with relieving wells, which empty out water automatically. She is also selfrighting. Captain C. M. Renaut, Government Marine Superintendent at Lyttelton, will represent the Government interests at the official trials.
Some time ago says a Christchurch paper ail Invercargill resident began to tell a story of an eel that ate out of a man’s hand. As this story followed several other very fishy stories, fhe listener openly showed his disbelief. Later, however, he was convinced, for he was shown' a photograph that settled all argument. A man was seen standing at the edge of a small creek, and an eel was eating out of his hand. The reporter was informed that for six years the eel had been a great friend of the family, and came to its meals when called. It would raise its head six inches out of the water to seize a pieee of meat, and would let its benefactor pick it out of the water.
“I am not a cigar-smoker, but I have smoked New Zealand tobacco, and I believe there is a great future before it, if it is worked in the right way,” declared Lord Oaigavon, in acknowledging at Wellington on Tuesday night the presentation to him, on behalf of the Ulster Association of New Zealand, of handsome inlaid casket or native timbers filled with cigars and cigarettes’ made from New Zealand tobacco. “In the right hands, New Zealand’s tobacco may become as famous as its butter and lamb.” In making the presentation, Mr Howard Elliott said that in Belfast there was the largest tobacco factory in the world. “I will recommend New Zealand tobacco to them,” he added, “and see whether Ulster and New Zealand cannot unite in producing the finest tobacco in the world.” (Applause).
