LONDON, Fob. 8
The “Daily News” discloses that after his speech at the Colliseiun on February 6tli Air S. Baldwin (Conservative Leader) took tho opportunity' at a semi-private Conservative dinner to make a slashing retort to the anti-Baldwin campaign, which Lord Rothermoro (press magnate) is conducting in the “Daily Mail.” The “D ilv News” says: The ex-Prime Minister declared that he did not desire the “Daily Mail’s” support, nor would ho, give us the Conservative leadership. The newspaper attacks beihg made on him were personal and unfair. As for Lord Rotherinere’s reputation for efficiency', it w'as the late Lord Northeliffe who made the “Daily Mail.” Lord Rotliermere had muddled his job as Air Minister in 1917-18, and he had resigned it because an attack on. his administration was ponding. Probably he (Rothermere) would not have got that post except for Lord Northeliffe’is influence.
When interviewed bv tho “Daily News,” Lord Rotliermere said that lie had just returned from America, and he had no knowledge of what Mr Baldwin said, and moreover was not concerned with w'hat lie had Said. Lord Rotliermere added; “Mr Baldwin is a completely incompetent pierson wlio, by an accident of post-war politics, has fluked his way into high office.”
