BANK HOLIDAYS AT EASTER
SEVEN IN EIGHT DAYS. “The position might not occur again for many years,” stated the manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of New Zealand (Mr J. MacGibbon) recently, when the fact that the banks will be closed for seven out of eight consecutive days this Easter was brought to bis notice. “The banks have no power to alter the holidays.. . They are statutory holidays, and, strictly speaking, if any banking business were done on those days it would tie illegal. If a cheque were dishonoured on a hank holiday the drawer could proceed against the bank for damages.” The seven days' holiday includes a Sunday. The banks, along with other firms,, will lie closed on Good J'riday, .April LA, The following Saturday i.ml Monday are statutory bank holidays. and the Tuesday is a special 1 hnk holiday in connection iwith Easter. The following day, Wednesday, happens to be St, George’s Day, another bank holiday. Thursday will the banks open for the first time since the previous Thursday, only to be closed agin on the Friday for Anzne Day, April 25.
