WOOL MARKET

PRICES BETTER

(By Telegrapn—Per Press Association.*

TIAIARU, February 7

The second South Canterbury wool sale of tbe season was held this afternoon. when 14,439 bales were offered compared with 22,470 bales at the corresponding saie last year. The decrease in the- offering may be attributed t . wet weather delaying shearing, and to ‘come growers holding their wool meantime in consequence of tbe weak market and tbe low prices offering. Generally speaking tbe offering was not up to the usual standard, tbe unseasonable weather resulting in a big proportion of the wool being teller. Super lots were really few and far between.

There was a full bench of buyers. They bidded spiritedly, but they did not appear prepared to exceed their limits.

Compared with tbe Dunedin sale of Wednesday, tbe prices for merino were one penny clearer; halfbreds were a halpenny ,to three-farthings clearer, and three-quarter and crossbreds were one half-penny dearer. Piece wool elicited keen competition from Continental 'buyers', and were about a penny cleared. Fully 80 per cent, of tbe wool was sold at auction, tlie bulk of tlie wool going to tlie Continent, though Bradford and tlie Dominion mills competed keenly for suitable lots.
