ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the above was held at the County Chambers at 7.35 o’clock. Present: Mr D. ▼j. Evans (President), Revd. G. KnowlesSmitli, and Nelson Wright,' Mrs Wright, Messrs R,. Lynn, J. . Conning, T. W. Duff, W. E. Richards. Apologies were made for the. absence of Miss Duff, Messrs Os megs and Coles.
The minutes of'the previous annual meeting were confirmed. Before proceeding with the regular business, the Chairman referred to the l>e reave me nts suffered; by Miss Daly, the official’ pianiste, Eric Moss, an ex-judge of the Society. Motions of sympatuy were carried with the families of the bereaved in their loss.
The annual balance sheet was presented. The year opened with a credit of £l3B, and dosed with credit increased to £153, a gaillW £ls. The total receipts for the had been £179. The Chairman remarked that the Society had held jts own financially since inauguration. The gain in the past year had not been as large as in the previous year owing to the fact that only one demonstration concert had been held. It was proposed this year to revert to two concerts and arrangements were being made accordingly. Reference wa« made to the care exercised in the expenditure, which enabled the finances to remain in a healthy condition. 'At the next. Competitions there would begone extra judge to facilitate the work; and make the sessions less strenuous. Satisfactory arrangements had been made and it was thought the annual' festival would be again greatly' enjoyed by the public. The support of the jpublic and competitions was appreciated and it would be the aim of tint Society to retain that confidence. The 'Chairman moved the adoption of the balance sheet, which was seconded by Mr R. Lynn, and carried after a short discussion.
Correspondence was laid before the meeting in respect to the judges. Miss Muriel P. Waugh,: of Christchurchy would again s be; judge of the dancing section, which this year would be extended somewhat. Mr . Arthur Lilly, A.R.C.0., of Christchurch, would be the musical judge and at his suggestion some vocal classes were added, including a quartette for four voices. Mr Barton Gingery of s -Wellington, was judge-of the elocutionary section, to which also extra-classes were? added, including a juvenile class for a Shakespeare championship. Mr Ginger offered to-donate a spec--ial prize to the lady or gentleman obtaining the highest aggregate marks in certain classes, - which was accept- ' ed with thanks. Mr Ginger.’s selection for the Shakespeare, . Championship for men is, Othello, Act 5, Scene 2; and for ladies, Hermione’s ■■ Defence, from ,Winter’s Tale, Act 8, Scene .2., . The Chairman reported the Princess Theatre had been secured fpr , the festival on three picture . nights through the kind permission of Everybody’s Pictures. , Thursday, May Bth would be the opening night, and there would be day, sessions,only on the following . Friday and Saturn day; Monday and Tuesday, May l2fch and 13th, the Theatre would be .occupied with both day and night sessions, while Wednesday, and, . Thursday, 14th and loth May would be the v Demonstration Concerts. ,■ This spread of days would avoid the heavy congestion of last year, and afford better opportunity to all concerned to excel. \L. .- The President, Secretary and Tjfeasurer were appointed a sub-commjlftee to circularise the public with regard to additional financial members of . a £1 guarantee to assure the funds of the Society. A. very cordial vote of thanks waa passed to all who had helped the Society in various ways during the past year. The Executive was asked to issue the book of words as early as possible, and it was decided to publish a book programme for the Competitions containing the entries for each event, which would be more convenient and useful for patrons at the Competitions. The meeting concluded at , 8.15 o’clock.
