Under the will of James B. Reid, who died in London, £250 is left to both the Canterbury and Dunedin Jockey Clubs, to be applied by the Clubs in providing a gold cup for cups as prizes. Canterbury and Otago branches of the Society for the 'Prevention lof Cruelty jbo Animals are also left £IOO each.

The call for volunteers for special mlitary .'police 'for Samoa broughjb prompt response in Wellington yesterday.
“We can fill any demand the Defence Department is likely to make and the response is eager and adequate,” said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mcilveney. “We have arranged a quota for the four cities and I have been deluged with telegrams from all over the country.”

Alfred Mair, boarding house keeper, was fined £3O by Magistrate Watson lor bookmaking oil a small scale. He was caught in the act in the street by a policeman.
THEFT CHARGES.
TAIHAPE, February 7
Three young men, W. B. Henderson, W. Aikman, and P. A. Halliday, were charged with theft of oil from a garage at Utiku and the theft of benzine from a tank lorry, standing outside. Henderson and Halliday have bad and were sentenced to two years' 1 * reformative at Borstal. Aikman was ordered to come, up for sentence within twelve months and to pay damages £5. ‘;
ALLEGED THEFT. U GRE Y MOUTH, February 7. John Clarence Casserley, aged .20, charged that on December 23rd last at Stillwater, being a Government employee, stole £6 9s 9d, the property of the Postmaster-General. He was reminded till Monday.
CONSTABLES GAOLED. WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. Two years’ hard labour was imposed by Judge Reed on two ex-constables concerned in the theft of goods from C. Smith Ltd. These were Stevenson and Ramm, the third man, White, getting 18 months’ reformative.
