STATE MINES

HON. W. A. VEITCH SATISFIED

i ßy Telegraph—Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Feb. 5,

Satisfaction with the result of his examination of the State Coal Mines system, was expressed by the Minister of Mines (Hon. W. A. Veitch) on his return from the West Coast to-day. The Minister explained that he had carried out a thorough inspection of the plant and organisation of the James and Liverpool Mines, his object being to discover whether the, plant and organisation were working to the best advantage, as it was his aim to keep down the costs of production without in any way reducing wages.

“There /is no idea of, reducing wages,” he added, “but it is desirable that the costs of production should be kept down as low as possble by maintaining an economic plant and first-class organisation., As the result of going over the ..whole scheme, land spending . considerable time in examining it, I, ln\ve come to the conclusion that the plant and organisation of the mines are very much better than I expected to find them, although there are some change,s that will be made. Nothing .coinprehensive, however, is contemplated or necessary.”
