HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONDAY, February 3

The Committee met at 7 p.m. —Present Messrs. A. C. Armstrong (Chairman), R. •). Redder, J._J. Breeze, H. 1C Swone.v, F. Chestormnn, W. E. Richards, W. 11. Shannon and J. Coo ning (lion. ’ Sec.) An apology was made for the absence of Airs AVilson. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.

IXWARD COR RESPONDEXCE

From Aliss Alaloney, dental nurse, notifying 1-1 patients, 45 attendances. Received.

The Chairman reported a visit from an.officer of the Dental Department, and stated that he had been advised to make application for a temporary assistant dental nurse, to enable <urears of work to he overtaken, to advise on the financial position and muxt application for assistance. He mo»’• in that direction. Seconded by Air Breeze and carried. From Kanieri School Committee, loiwnrding donation towards picnic turn! of 25s and 40s for clinic fund.—Received with thanks. From Brunner Picnic Committee, asking foi* arrangements to be made for their picnic on 28th. —-Received and attended to. From Beefton Picnic Committee, promising to make arrangements lor the Hokitika excursion to Reefton,--Received. From Reefton Jockey Club, granting use of Reefton racecourse for picnic.— Deceived. From Reefton Committee, asking for arrangements to made for picnic excursion to Hokitika. —Received. From Mrs AV. H. Alorris, Reefton. applying for right for ice cream stall at picnic, and promising donation. Received. From E. Partridge, acknowledging letter of condolence from Committee in connection with recent bereavement. Received. The appointment rtf Air C. G. A\ Warren, of Hawkes Bay, as Ist. .assistant master was confirmed. From E. Partridge, resigning position as rector of the District High School, having received an appointment as inspector of schools, and thanking the members of the Committee for the assistance and support always given him during his term of office. —Received.

.Mr Richards moved the reception of the resignation with extreme regret. They were losing an extremely good man, who had shown a remarkably fine public spirifedness. He mentioned with appreciation the great improvement to the school grounds, and expressed liis pleasure at his advancement, while regretting his resignation. Seconded by the Chairman. It was a most unpleasant necessity. They had had the most pleasant relations between the Committee and Staff. He felt he was voicing the general regret, not only of the Comnfittee, but of the public as a whole. He seconded the motion with regret at the necessity of the severance of the pleasant recollections that had always existed.

All members joined in expressing extreme regret at the resignation and appreciation of the splendid services rendered by Air Partridge both in and out o*f the school. The motion was then put and carried. Mr Partridge thanked members for their remarks. He assured them that lie had always endeavoured to Jo his bit. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. Air Shannon moved that the High School Board be than for the excellent work in connection with arranging for the hostel. Seconded by the Chair,m in and carried. Members who had ’inspected the hostel spoke very favourably of the excellent arrangements and improvements made at the hostel, wnieh were very satisfactory. Some details for the clinic were approved and authorised.

The Rector (Mr E. Partridge) reported the school resumed that morning the roll number being primary 305, secondary 106. Mr Edwards had taken up duties of temporary assistant in place of Air AVilliamson. Air Anderson as Commercial Master, Miss Dale as assistant Mistress, Aliss Dixon and Misses Veale and Neville as probationary teachers; giving particulars of recent examinations. A credit balance of £49 19s Gd had been handed over as a result of the school concert, in addition to which £29 12s had been paid for the school prizes, a total profit of £79 11s 6d. Some requirements were noted around the grounds, a fence on the west side, some topdressing with lime of the lawns, and other matters detailed.—Received. The Chairman said the revenue from the concerts quite exceeded all expectations. He thanked the Rector and staff for their efforts both in the financial sense and the value to the children who took part. He thought a letter of appreciation should be sent to Miss Duff for her splendid work. He moved to that effect. Seconded by Mr Sweney and carried.

The requirements asked for were authorised. _>i A vote of appreciation was passed to the Rector and staff in connection with the recent examinations. The committee rose at 8.5 p.m.
