At the Inter-State Tennis Tourney, New South Wales men’s and women’s teams defejated Victoria ;by a wide margin and won the men’s contest with Queensland, though some keenly fought games were witnessed in this case. The most notable feature was the defeat of the Queensland pair, Moon and Cummings, by Hungerford and AlcCausland 7—5, B—6. The visitors subsequently won a keenly contested match with Sprouie and Dunlop 6—7, /— 5, B—6. The State championships are now in progress, but so far have been confined to preliminaries. SHEARING AWARD. BRISBANE, Feb. 3. A now shearing award operates today. Union officials anticipate work will proceed without a hitch. MR BAVIN. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 3. SYDNEY, Feb. 3

The consumption of alcoholic liquors in New South Wales is falling appreciably, owing to depression and to increased prices. 'File sale of- beer during December was exactly 204,575 gallons less than in the corresponding month of 1928. The sales of spirits showed hardly so pronounced a decline. Yet they were substantial enough to cause the liquor trade the utmost concern. .v.
