INTER-STATE TOURNEY,

At the Inter-State Tennis Tourney, New South Wales men’s and women’s teams defejated Victoria ;by a wide margin and won the men’s contest with Queensland, though some keenly fought games were witnessed in this case. The most notable feature was the defeat of the Queensland pair, Moon and Cummings, by Hungerford and AlcCausland 7—5, B—6. The visitors subsequently won a keenly contested match with Sprouie and Dunlop 6—7, /— 5, B—6. The State championships are now in progress, but so far have been confined to preliminaries. SHEARING AWARD. BRISBANE, Feb. 3. A now shearing award operates today. Union officials anticipate work will proceed without a hitch. MR BAVIN. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 3. The Prime Minister announced tonight that he is going to England in July or August to attend the Imperial Conference.
AUSTRALIA’S OUTLOOK. MR SCULLIN’S OPTIMISM. SYDNEY,. Feb. 3. The Federal Prime Minister, Air J. H. Scullin, and Mr Bavin (State Premier) had a further talk to-day over the financial position. Mr Scullin later made a statement. He pointed out that, while the position of the Commonwealth, as a whole, was admittedly difficult, it would not be improved by undue pessimism. He had absolute confidence iii the resources of Australia, and in its powers of recuperation. Therefore he counselled the community not to view the outlook through dark glasses.
LESS LIQUOR
USED IN N.S. WALES,
SYDNEY, Feb. 3
The consumption of alcoholic liquors in New South Wales is falling appreciably, owing to depression and to increased prices. 'File sale of- beer during December was exactly 204,575 gallons less than in the corresponding month of 1928. The sales of spirits showed hardly so pronounced a decline. Yet they were substantial enough to cause the liquor trade the utmost concern. .v.
