When approaching Baulers the driver was about to apply the brakes when tiie steam gauge burst. Boiling water and steam gushed out, severely scalding both men’s hands 'and faces and making it impossible for them to reach the brake handle. Despite the agony he was suffering the driver climbed across the tender and, hanging on. by one hand, attempted with the other to disconnect the brake tube. He lost his grip and fell on to the track. The stoker then made his way to the back of the tender and succeeded in bringing the train to a standstill.
