TOBACCONIST SHOP BURNT. HASTINGS, Feb. 3. A fire broke-out in H. Austin’s tobacconist and hairdressing wooden building at Heretaunga ‘ St. early on Sunday morning, but the Brigade confined the outbreak.to-the front of the shop, the saloon being practically undamaged except by heat and smoke. The front of the shop was not damaged to a serious but the. stock was badly affected by fire and smoke. Shops on both sides were constructed of wood and the brigade. made a good save. ATTEMPTED MURDER. CHARGE,' AUCKLAND, Feb. 3. Hone Pairana, a farmer, was remanded to February 10th on a charge of attempting to murder Tini Ahur- , angi at Paevuhure near Te Kuiti. SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENT. WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 3. A serious motor accident occurred at Pukcora Sanatorium hill yesterday afternoon. A car, driven by J. J. Mansfield, of 'Palmerston North, containing his wife and three children and a niece was proceeding to Palmerston North and Napier. It plunged , over a thirty foot bank owing to the steering rod breaking. Mrs Mansfield was thrown through the windscreen, sustaining , extensive cuts, abrasions and shock. The daughter was badly crushed about the chest and body and was admitted to the Waipukurau hospital an a serious condition. The other occupants are suffering from bruises: and shock. Mansfield resides at Wilson's Line and is a wool sliper.
