N.S.W. COAL TROUBLE

(Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, January 30. Justice Rich in the High Court today granted the coal owners formal leave to appeal against Judge Beeby’s interim award made in the Federal Arbitration Court, Melbourne,' last Thursday, when the Judge held that there is a serious inter-State dispute in the coal industry, and fixed a date for the hearing of the claims of the Miners’ Federation. Argument on the appeal in the High Court is fixed for February 17th. SYDNEY, Jan. 31 The coal dispute is: likely to engage tlie Federal Prime Minister, Mr J. H. Scull in. and the Premier of New South Wales, Mr T. Bavin, during the weekend. Mr Bavin has. announced that his Government are now seriously considering the withdrawal of their offer of last September of a reduction in.the coal handling charges. MR THEODORE’S COUNTER. SYDNEY, Jan. *3l. Air Scullin is perturbed at the recent turn of events in financial circles abroad, insofar as it is due to industrial unrest in Australia. Hon Mr Theodore (Federal Treasurer) is reported to have , told some of his constituents that the Federal Government is seriously thinking of imposing a prohibitive tariff on imported coal.

VOLUNTEERS ATTACKED. ONE SERIOUSLY. (Received this dav at 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 1. Remarkable scenes were witnessed at the Central Railway Station last night following the arrival of a party of volunteer miners from Rotlibury. Pickets attempted to molest the men. one of whom was brutally assaulted and was sent to the hospital with severe scalp wounds. During stoppages at mining towns en route to Sydney, the volunteers were hooted and insulted by groups of miners gathered on the platform. Many volunteers upon arrival made a dash for waiting taxis, but Millard, the.man who was injured, walked. He was soon struck down and kicked.
