CHICHESTER’S FLY
A BROADCAST DESCRIPTION. CHICHESTER. ON THE AIR. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 31. Chichester broadcasted to-night, from 2BL, Sydney, and it is understood was to be rebroadcast from 21YA, Wellington. His interviewer here was Conrad Charlton, official announcer at 2 BL, who is also a New Zealander. Chichester described the cause of his crash at Tripoli and said the air service between England and Australia would come sooner or later. The type of machine required would bo a flying boat capable of doing a hundred miles an hour and flying eight hours a day and complete the journey in three weeks. He suggested as an initiative such a service should be taken by the Australian Government.
Chichester spent five weeks preparing for his flight. He had to have passports for every country flown over. All this was arranged for him by the authorities in England. He explained the trip from Darwin was very difficult and extremely hot and dusty and he could only see about half a mile ahead. There were no rivers where they should have been, and roads where he. expected to see them. It is understood they only had rain up that way every nine yepw. The announcer Charlton described Chichester as looking very fit and added Australia had given him a wonderful reception and he now looked to New Zealand to carry on the good work.
CHICHESTER \S RETUR N. TO NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY, January 31. The New Zealand airmail, Chichester, slept in late this morning. His long flight in the steaming tropical heat took toll of his strength. 'Hie New Zealanders here, in collaboraetion with the Aero Club, are arranging a Savage Club weclome for Chichester on next Wednesday night.
