The Spanish Dictatorship which has been in existence since 1923, ended when De Rivera handed hia resignation to the King at mid-day. v .= General Damaslo Bernguer, chief of the King’s military household ; and former High Commissioner at Morocco has been deputed to form a Cabinet. 1 Events moved with dramatic suddenness, All day Ministers'. of Finance and of the Inferior were present with Alfonso. The resignation took : place a few hours ’sooner than expected, and it is stated to be directly due to ominous information from provinces, particularly Andalusia and Cadiz, indicating the state of great unrest spread throughout the country. Details of the planned revolt at Barcelonia reached the capital, also the fact that many military units .especially artillery engineers and air force, 0pp0... _ the Premier’s policy. De Rivera had telephone consultations with the Director of the Civil Guards, and the Chief of Police, after which he decided to see the King and inform him of the situation, and point out the crisis might be solved by his immediate resignation. It is stated the culminating point of the resignation was due to the fact that during the conference with the King, De Rivera stated he did not realise his note to the army cabled on Sunday had in effect ignored King’s authority,' thereby placing the opinion of the army and navy above that of the King, Avho possessed the absolute right' to appoint and dismiss his Ministers.
