FIRST RACE A)]ON BY OTAGO BOAT., (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Jan. 28. The first race for. the Sanders Cup was sailed on Waftemata Harbour this afternoon, and .Resulted in a win for the Eileen (Otago) by eight minutes a-ml. three seconds, from the Avalon (Auckland), the., .only .other boat to finish.., ; .... , )V :■ The other .starters were the Colleen (Canterbury) and Clyde (Wellington). There was a fresh northerly wind, and a big sea. The order from the start was, Clyde Avalon, Colleen, and Eileen. The Eileen put in board towards the shore, which was a wise move, and when, she broke tacks, she headed the other three competitors. She continued tc improve her position and led for the .remainder of' the race. . Twelve minutes.• aftei;- the start, the Colleen carried away her back and main stay, and retired. The Avalon and Clyde mistook the green light buoy for the.white. .light in Rangitoto channel, and realised their error only when they .saw the Eileen rounding the white light. This mistake cost both boats any chance of success, although it .is doubtful whether, even if they had sailed-a correct course,, they would have .caught, the Eileen. Two minutes after rounding the white light buoy on the first round, the Clyde carried ;;way the gooseneck on h main boom, and retired. ■' lie Eilet n’s time was 4 hours 27
