TWO SHOPS BURNT. B Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. . - GORE, Jan. 28. A firo destroyed two shops in the main street of Gore .at an early hour this morning,, the premises being occupied by Cook Bros, (butchers) and Miss F. Johnston (fruiterer). The flames had too good a hold when the brigade arrived, but a splendid save was made of the adjoining premises. Stocks carried in the shops were light. The buildings were owned by itlesdanies T. Ambrose. Insurances are unavailable. HOUSE BURNT. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 28. . A narrow escape from being trapped in ii blazing house was the experience of Mrs H. J. Newton and her two children when their home at 57 Mary St. Papanui, caught fire early this morning. Mrs Newton awakened to find the bedroom full of smoke and darts of and just had time to bring MiNewton from his bedroom in a bach a few yards from the house to rescue the children, bdfore the whole house burst into flames. The occupants escaped in their night clothes, nothing being saved. Newton had his hair singed in rescuing the children. ALLEGED CANCER CURE. HAMILTON, Jan. 28. Replying to Dr M. H. Watt, Di-rector-General of Health, that it was not proved that he had ever suffere from cancer. Louis 1 White, of Frankton, described the statement as .misleading and absurd. , White states whpn discharged from the hospital as incurable and the Railway Department for whom he was working was notified that he was suffering from malignant vosicile growth described as the most dangerous form of cancer. Patients treated by White are said to have shown noticeable improvement although'he arrived too late on each occasion to effect a cure. White denied he was commercialising the treatment.
