The Admiralty announces the definite cancellation of the cruisers Surrey and Northumberland, the construction of which was suspended. GENERAL BOOTH’S NOMINATION. (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 27. The “Daily Mail” learns that General Booth’s secret envelope, which was burned, contained the name of Catherine Booth as his successor. A member of the Booth family says the fact that the solicitor had revealed the date of Booth’s signature removes' doubts regarding the identity of the successor. It also proves that the General changed his mind when'he'found the nine commissioners who sent him a letter were attempting to alVer the constitution of the Army.
PROHIBITION DEBATES. WASHINGTON, Jan. 27. Unprecedented fury which marked the prohibition debates recently in Congress shows how acute the issue stands, but there- recently was no chance as far as observers are able to judge, that the existing order of things relating to liquor will be overturned, as fully three-fourths of the members of bcAfch Houses and Congress are dry. MR HERTZOG’S VIEWS. CAPETOWN, January 27. The Assembly adopted the Premier’s moion confirming the Government s acceptance of the optional clause in the World Court. It is unthinkable, said Premier Hertzog that members of the British Commonwealth, owing allegiance to the same King, should go to war with each other.
