The annual War Office contract for safety razor blades has for the first time been given to a British firm. Previously it has always gone to America. AUSTRALIA DAY. NEW- YORK, Jan. 25. . Brookes, speaking at an Australia Day reception, paid a tribute to Sir E. Howard’s services. He read Air Sculin’s cablegram commenting on the London Conference and its profound effect on the future peace of the world that every American must delight to participate in Australia’s birthday. He commented on the similarity of the two forms of Government, and paid a tribute to Howard’s services, not only to Britain but to America. Howard expressed pleasure over the friendly co-operation received by the Embassy from various commissioners, and particularly the official secretary, Air Dow. He thanked Air Brookes for the honour of participating in Australia Day, certainly for the last time as Ambassador to America.
YOUTH GUILLOTINED. PARIS, January 24. With a joke on his lips, Joseph Ughetto, aged 18 years, was guillotined at Dignos for the brutal murder of five members off one family (as cabled on September 17th., 1929). His seventeen year old accomplice escaped the death sentence on account of his youth. A HUGE COMBINE. LONDON, Jan. 26. A huge amalgamation has been completed between the South Wales coalfields, and the Welsh Associated Collieries Ltd. The capital is eight and a half millions sterling. The United States Army Signal Corps at Fairbanks, Alasga, reported on Saturday night that Eielson’s plane was reported found, smashed up. There are no details.
