TOURIST LINER LOST
1,500 PEOPLE STRANDED. [ United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). BUENOS AYRES, Jan. 21, The German steamer “Monte Cerovantes” struck a reef in the Beagle Channel, at Tierra Del Piiego Island, near Cape Horn on Wednesday last. There were fifteen hundred passengers and crew aboard. All' aboard were safely transferred to the shore, but the Master, Captain Di •ever, returned to the ship, and he was drowned next day, when a storm arose and the steamer broke in halves and slipped into deep water under the • buffeting of thundering seas. The passengers number eleven hundred. They included fifty South American millionaires. There is some concern felt regarding their plight on the island Ilsliima on which they are taking refuge. This island is a penal settlement. It is separated from the mainland of Tien a Del Fuego by the Beagle Channel. It is a bleak forbidding spot. The only buildings besides the prison quarters, are a disused Mission Station, and a few stores and residences. These are altogether inadequate for such a large influx ! of lodgers. !.,•/ -The eteameV I 'Monte Sarmiento,” a sister ship to Hie. sunken craft, nas P- been ordered south from Monte Video to pick up the stranded tourists.
