' ' ‘ OF MASTER MARINER. (By Telegraph—Press Association). GISBORNE, Jan. 124. During his twenty-five years’ service in charge of the Union S.S. Coy’s lighter Tuateu, which until a few years ago transferred passengers from .Gisborne wharves to steamers in the roadstead, Captain J. H. Hawkes has transported over 300,000 passengers, and has never had one Owing to the improved haf'fetm'r *"<3bnditions, the Tuateu was removed from the service, taken to Auckland, and later sold by the Union Company, ami Captain Hawkes retired. To-day Captain Hawkes was met by a large and representative gathering of citizens, Heads of local bodies, and prominent country residents, and was presented with an illuminated address, and a well-filled wallet. Numerous speakers made highly eulogistic remarks on the invaluable work done by Captain Hawkes, and the deep debt owed to him by the travelling public. Captain Hawkes suitably responded.
