There has been a bye-eleetoin for. ■the Beth'al, seat, owing to Mr Tie.lnan Ttdos being appointed to the bench. It has resulted in the South African part TT rrr ”’riing the seat bv a-majority 'of fifty votes. At the general election the Nationalists’ majority was 107. The campaign was largely a personal duel' between Mr Pirow. who ■.succeeds Mr Boos- as Minister of Justice, and Mr J. H. Tfofmevr, who .s • regarded as a brilliant star in the South African Party firmaments, but is-still a man of mystery. • In a bye-election for the Stellenbosch electorate, the Nationalist Party ..have retained the seat, but their majority was reduced from 250 to 14. Speaking in the Union Asesmbly today, General Hertzog declared his ' conviction, that the South West Africa .mandated .territory would ultimately he incorporated in Hie Union of South Africa, the present mandate ceasing.
