CABLE SHIP’S TASK. NEW YORK, December 3. The chief cable companies with 10 i i,21 cables snapped by the. recent earthquake beneath the waters of the Atlantic, have been obliged during the last two weeks to accept traffic subject to delay. Somewhere at different localities about 250 miles off Newfoundland half a dozen ships are braving tempestuous seas, waiting for an opportunity to pick up the broken ends of the cables. The Western Union Telegraph Co, has two repair vessels near the scene j of the breaks, and has ordered a third j to join them from London. The Commercial Cable Co. is operating a fleet of the. same size, and the French Cable Company has commissioned one vessel to restore its services. Hovering near the spot which delicate instruments ashore have indicated as points of breakages, the vessels first drop weights which, when drawn up, show the nature of the ocean bed. Then using suitable grappling hooks, they cruise at right angles to the cable, and when one end has been found it is brought to the surface and fastened to a bouy. I The other end may be miles away, as the result of water currents or ground movements: When it has been found and moored, the work of splicing begins.
