The Wairurapa Lawn Tennis Association’s open championships an d handicaps tournament commenced on, tlu'i Masterton Club’s courts to-day in fine weather. The entries total 584. being an increase of 23 compared with last year.
Included amongst the competitors are prominent players from Aucklahd Wellington and Canterbury. Messrs .1. C. Charters (Whangarei), A. Stedman (Auckland), W. H. Entwhistle (Auckland) will lend interest in the men’s singles, while Misses M. Andrew (Canterbury) and M. Myers (Wanganui) and Mrs "W. J. Melody will ensure a high standard in the ladies championship singles. Stedman easily defeated K. Groves in the first match 6—2. 6 2. S. P. Wheeler (Wellington) lost to B. P. Welch (Masterton) 6—2, 6—3. W. J. Melody defeated R. Warded 6—4. 6—l. Ladies championship singles.—Mrs E. Wells (Gisborne) defeated Miss J. Dods (Auckland) 6—3, 6—4.
