THE ARMY OUTLAY
THIS YEAR'S INCREASE
[United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.]
LONDON, Jan. 21
The Daily Telegraph declares: The Right TT on. Philip Snowden (Chancellor of the Exchequer) has decided on a drastic, crippling reduction of the Army Estimates, w'hicli originally were twenty-five hundred thousand pounds above those of last year. The Chancellor demands that the whole of this increase lie wiped out. If this is effected, it ivill mean a ruthless scrapping and paring away of every form of re-equipment and training. This is being done in order not to increase the unemployment. The reductions include a curtailment •of all the military expenditure at (Singapore. The difficulties of the War Office have been increased by its having 1 to find one million sterling in conn/x-tion with fhe return of the Rhine Army. Germany has hitherto paid these expenses. The reduction is injurious to the efficiency of the Army, and it is being obtained by cutting off such changes as the development of motor transport. The Army’s pay will not be touched, except for the automatic reduction of one per cent. , This only means a saving of £120,000.
