U.S.A. TARIFF

NEW YORK “WORLD” HITS OUT,

[United Press Association —By Electric

Telegraph—Copyright.]

NEW YORK, Jan. 20

'The New York “World,” in a leading article, commenting on the forthcoming review of the Tariff Bill before the Senate, states that body will then have the opportunity to undo the betrayal of the consumers contained in “it abject surrender to the unreasonable demands of the wool growers and the manufacturers.” The paper continues: “If, for no •s bbfter reason than ■ political expen,l (dincy, the wool schedule should be overhauled, and the rates drastically reduced. As it now stands, the schedule should b 0 overhauled and the rates drastically reduced. As it now stands, the schedule smells to heaven. It will rob the poor, and the poorer ’■the Citizen is the worse he will be robbed. It is really a blow at the farmer’s pocket book. Ihe large •wool ranch owners are in almost a . better- condition than any other of ithe agricultural group. They have 'been recently adversely affected by ■ two bumper clips in Australia, but the price of wool is still further above ’the pre-war level than the prices of . other staple farm products. Under modern conditions the small farmer .cannot raise sheep for wool at a proi ifit. In effect, then this higher duty • means the taxation of the less prosperous for the benefit of a small fraction who nre relatively prospor- . ous.”
