STEAMER AT STEWART ISLAND

INVERCARGILL, Jan. 20

While the s.s. Awarua was berthed at Half Moon bay, Stewart Island, to-day, the top of her foremast was struck by a bolt of lightning. The lamp and about three feet of the mast were carried away. The boat was enveloped in a smother of sparks, and there- was a terrific explosion, the foremast being carried overboard. One steel wire was burnt through, and other minor damage was done. Fortunately no one sustained injuries, but the passengers received a considerable shock. The damage will amount to about £25.
