MAWSON EXPEDITION

A BLIZZARD EXPERIENCED. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, Jan. 16. A despatch from Sir Douglas Mawson’s Expedition states that during the gloriously, clear, calm evening hours on the 6th. January, the “Discovery” steamer south-west through loose pack ice towards the coast, on which it is hoped to effect a landing, passing floes bearing curious denizens of these* regions. Mirrored by the placid waters they made a fascinating midnight scene. A few hours later a meteorological chaos reigned. A fierce blizzard came down suddenly from the land slopes, but fortunately there was open water nearby and into this the ship was steered and rode out the fury of the storm, though passing bergs, looming like a spectre through the drifting snow, several times narrowly missed the ship. The wind reached the velocity of 70 miles hourly, and averaged 50. The gale died down next day. I
