THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
OTIRA AND FRANZ JOSEF. At one time it was a matter of difficulty to find out about trains and travelling by rail in New Zealand, but the new spirit in the Department has changed all that. Nowadays the Department goes out and looks for business. Some excellent pictorial pamphlets and “folders” have been issued to let the public know all about their own railways. Two of the latest deal, with the walk over the Otira from Arthur’s Pass to Otira and with the Franz Josef Glacier, one of the most remarkable in the world. The walk over the Otira is done quite easily by taking the train » to the Canterbury side, walking from Arthur’s Pass to Utira and then taking train again. In the spring and summer all the Alpine flowers are in their prime and the views are grand and imposing. The Franz Josef Glacier needs no comment, but the pamphlet is welcome, as it shows exactly how to get there and uie cost of the railway journey from, all the principal centres in both islands. The excursion fares are particularly attractive. —Auckland Star.
