(By Telegraph—Per Press Association., HEADMASTER’S ACTION. EDUCATION BOARD’S COMMENT. AUCKLAND, Jan. 15. In view of the controversy that arose over the methods used by the headmaster of the Avandole Public School to a pupil, the Education Board Committee to-day reported that the headmaster'had been exonerated from the charge of using an harshness in investigating the alleged theft. The Board expressed regret that the Board’s servant had been subjected to criticism concerning its action. It had been alleged that the headmaster’s methods were tantamount to the application of the third degree and the case was pursued in the Supreme Court, with the result that an order, placing the child in the care of a Child Welfare officer, was quashed.
SALE OF LIQUOR. IN OONFECTIQNEiR/’S SHOP. HAMILTON, Jan. 15. A constable on three separate occasions purchased a quantity of liquor from a confectioner’s!, shop in Upper Victoria Street, Hamilton, run by Leslie George Brown, . His purchases included a bottle of sherry for 7s 6d, and small bottles of ale Is each. The shop later was raided when all that was found were a number of empty bottles. A prosecution was instituted against i ßrown and since he has sold out his business l and' left town and his whereabouts:, according to the police, Are unknown. Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said Brown* had purchased beer from a local b ewery under an assumed name and in less than two months bought no less than 72 dozen pint bottles. Accused was fined £lO on each of three charges, the alternative being a month in ea*ch case.
FOUND DEAD. GISBORNE, Jan. 15. A man named Victof’Stanley Hunt, about 88 years of age, a well-known horse trainer, omuloyed by J. C. N. Thomas, was found dq«d in bed at his employer’s residence this afternoon. WATERSIDER. INJURED. GTSBORNE, Jan. 15. While loading mutton this afternoon from a lighter on the liner Port Sydney, in the roadstead, a carcase slipped from the sling, and fell on a watersider named Irvine Harvey, s"' ■rears of age. It struck him on the back. Harvey was removed to Cook Hospital. His injuries are not serious.

ALLEGED BRIBERY. HAMILTON, January 15. Two charges of bribery were perferred against Harry Abraham Samuels a local tailor, who a fortnight ago was convicted of bookmaking and fined £3OO. The charges arose out of the receipt through, the post by Detective Sergeant Thompson and Detective White df a packet containing a case of pipes. A ten pound note accompanied the card with a picture of a racehorse signed Harry Samuels. Following the receipt of the parcels, Dectectives waited on Samuels, who according to evidence given in the court to-day admitted sending the parcel, remarking that he did not register them as he did .not want, the post-office people to know anything about them. Apparently believing the • detectives had accepted the bribe, lie confided in them some hookmaking business and also promised to put money on a good thing for each of them on the following Monday. Harry Abraham Samuels, tailor, of Hamilton, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial mi two charges of bribery.
