DAIRY , PRODUCE. MONTHLY REVIEW,

At the request of several of our readers We have decided in future to give the. mean London quotations in our monthly reports in place of the top prices as hitherto. \ BUTTER.

The downward movement reported last moiith has continued throughout December, New Zealand salted falling from 165 s on the 6th 'December to 158 s on 'the 4th January. Messrs \Y. Weddel and Co. Ltd., cabling us this week, state that there is no apparent reason for this further fall, other than the general “lack of confidence” expressed in our last monthly review, or as another cable states, owing to general trade depression a,rising from the world’s financial crash. They further advise that the retail price has remained at Is 8d !per lb which is high, considering the present wholesale price of 158 s for Fern Leaf and 153 s for Kangaroo brand, hut that uo improvement is expected 'until -jtlie large operators can be induced to buy more heavily for tlxeir forward requirements. Production in New Zealand continues good and will do mucli to keep up the total export value of our dairy produce. Grading figures are, however, not yet available owing to delays during the holidays. In the meantime a few sales to Canada have been effected for January shipment, on the basis of Is 4d nett f.o.b. CHEESE. The market for both white and coloured has further declined and is noiv quoted at 87s 6d and 85s 63 with a quiet market. Messrs W. Weddel and Co. Ltd., report that although stocks are comparatively' small, and there is a fair demand, the market is prevented from rising by the action of re-sellers freely offering January deliveries at 86s and also by the heavy afloats of New Zealand cheese which arc clue for arrival this month.
