Six wickets were then down for 148. Turnbull joined Nichols and blocked the first tall from Blunt. The latter’s deliveries were puzzling the bats-
men. At 160 Badcock relieved Merritt and bowled a maiden to Nichols. The bowling aided by the well placed, field kept the score down. Turnboil was caught by Merritt at ’midoff, the bowler being Badcock. Barratt was the newcomer and he hit Merritt to the boundary and he then jumped out to the next one and was stumped. Cornford joined Nichols and Page replaced ' Blunt at the south end. In his second over Nichols hit out and was; caught by Dickinson. Allom was the last man. 'Cornford nulled Merritt to the square-leg boundary. Blunt again went on at the south end. The innings ended when Cornford was caught by Lowry off Blunt, whose average was three for seventeen. The New. Zealand slow bowlers were well suited by the wicket, and the fieldine was keen. NEW ZEALAND. Ist Innings ... 112 NEW ZEALAND—2nd Innings. Blunt joined Dempster, the latter bringing up ten 'with a late cut off Allom for 2, after the innings had been in progress for twenty-three
minutes. Woolley replaced Allom who went on at the north end. Blunt hit Woolley to the leg boundary and twenty came up in thirty-three minutes. Blunt touched an off bad from Woolley and was caught in the' slims. Page was the next batsman. The score at lunch was 28 for two wickets.
Play was resumed with an attendance of about three thousand. Page hit seven off Woolley’s first over. The score is two for 41.
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 13. The score at 2.40 was 3 wickets for 65 (Dempster 25, Page (not out) 19, extras 12.)
