A cigarette and tobacco war that has been going on for some time in Dunedin shows no sign of abating and one local tobacconist said on Wednesday that he was sure some of smaller shopkeepers must be feeling the pinch. One result it lias had, however, he believes, is that there has i ecu a farily substantial increase in the number of cigarettes smoked through pipe smokers have not been affected to the same extent.
It Impelled in a Taranaki township, according to an exchange, and the truth of it can he vouched for. A young woman was proud of the wondvful white radishes, she had grown i» her garden, and was persuaded by a friend to enter some in the produce section of the show. She naturally selected the biggest and best, and tbok them to the hall, placing them with radishes which, to her eyes were much inferior. She felt sure that she must gain first prize. She did, Gut not in the radish class. A steward noticed her exhibit, and placed it with the turnips! The judge apparently considered her radishes an extra good type of turnip, and had no difficulty in awarding the first prize in that class.
It will be a surprise to our readers to learn that Mr W. T. Morpeth, Commissioner of Crown Lands here since 1922, has tendered his resignation and will be leaving the public service at the end of June. Mr and Mrs Morpeth purpose residing in Now Plymouth where they have property, One special reason prompting the resignation of Mr Morpeth, is we regret to say, the indisposition of his wife, who lias not been in the best of health for some time, and the change, it is hoped, will lie of advantage from a health point of view. Mr Morpeth, during Jiis seven years and a-half of service here 'ins proved an energetic officer, who has taken a keen interest in his duties. He has been alert as to the requirements of the district, and has been instrumental in drawing attention to' ettleincnt schemes which will prove of advantage when developed. Mr Morpeth has also taken an interest in the reading of the district, and generally has been alive to the settlement needs o. the district. As an active officer of the nublic service he has not spared himself, and has earned the good wishes of the community in his forthcoming retirement.
