While working on the erection of two poles for electric wires at the site of the new Waimakariki Bridge, just after noon to-day, Wm. Cecil Martin received a fatal electric shock. On arrival at ..'hristchurch Hospital attempts were made to resuseiate him, but in vain. Martin, who was aged about 30 years, lived with his father the licensee of the Belfast Hotel. He was employed by Mr G. F. Drury, who was putting in two poles for North Canterbury Power Board. These were to carry 11,000 volt transmission lines Martin, it is stated, was heightening a guy wire to the ‘ pole of the driving derrick when the guy wire came in contact with the transmission line.

CROSSING SMASH

CHRISTCHURCH, January 10

Jack Warren, single, aged twenty employed by Tuck’s Ltd., grocers was seroiusly injured when the ear he was driving collided with a train on the Bryiulwr crossing. The van was struck by tbe Parnassus express, which was travelling at a fast speed. The car was smashed and most of it was carried for a distance of nearly 300yds. The driver was unconscious when picked up. He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital, suffering from a facturede left arm, leg and head’ injuries.

EDUCATION SELECT 1 COMMITTEE.

WELLINGTON, Jan. 11

'The Select Committee which heard evidence throughout New Zealand on the educational question will this month prepare its report for submission to the Government. The Minister of Education states the members of the Committee will reassemble in Wellington on January 20th, and commence the work of sifting the evidence and framing recommendations.

Taranaki oil report:—Gisborne No. 2 well bored to 3290 feet. Stronger blow of gas is now coming. At 3298 feet there is hard material.
