MID-DAY JEWEL HAUL
THIEF SEEN BUT NOT SUSPECTED
STROUD, (Gloucestershire) Nov. 23. A daring robbery was committed during the mid-day closing hour today at the shop of Messrs Wells and Sons, jewellers, of Stroud.
The roller shutters of the window were down, but the thief lifted the doorway shutter, smashed the fanlight inside, and climbedin to the shop
Behjnd the shuttered windows he was able without disturbance to select gold watches, diamond rings, signet and wedding rings, and other jewellery valued at between £2,000 and £3,000. He then left the shop by the door pulling up the shutter about two feet and scrambling underneath.
He was seen to leave with a hag over his shpulder by a number of workmen. Their suspicions were not immediately aroused because be was dressed in blue dungaree trousers, a light coat and a cap, and appeared very similar to workmen who had been painting the outside of the shop in the last few days.
The man left some steps and a jemmy behind. He missed an open safe in the shop containing articles more valuable than those lie took.
