OTAGO .TEAM FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. (By Telegraph—Praia Association). DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. The following will represent Otago at the National Swimming Championship at Greymouth: Calder and Walter (diving). Miss Mathieson (all intermediate girls). MeLay (intermediate boys’ diving). Nancy Olds (all junior girls). Geddes, Jarvis and Buekland (all junior boys). Fogg (150yds. men’s backstroke). The swimmer registering the fastest time in the Batt pup harbour race will represent Otago in tlie.Kellerman Cup race and also in the mile and 880yds. championships. The Avater polo side will also be selected. .
At a continuation, yesterday of the Otago Championships, Geddes, who broke three New Zealand junior records at - the - Championship Carnival last month, set a new Otago Centre record in 150yds. junior boys’ championship, covering the distance in’jioO 1-5. Bailey won the 880yds. Championship and Miss Jepson the 100yds ladies.
SWIMMING CONTROVERSY. TOUR OF RYAN AND GRIFFITHS SYDNEY, -JftL 9. The “Guardian’s” says the charges of discourtesy and ungentlemanly conduct made by Ashburton SAvimming. Association .against Ryan and Griffiths have aroused a storm of protest in Sydney. >: ; Dexter (Chairman of NeAv- South Wales Swimming Assn.) says, evidently Ashburton Assn, is under the impression that the swimmers lmd approved of the itinerary mapped out. Such is not the ease .and blame must be laid at the door of the New Zealand Swimming Assn. Ryan's coach (Hay) considers that Ryan and Griffiths have tieen scandalously treated 'by both the New Zealand Swimming Assn, and tne Australian Swimming Union. Mr MacDonald (Secretary of the NeAv South Wales Assn.) said; -I have no hesitation iff saying that noAvhere else in the Avoi’lil Avould a controlling body impose such a killing itinerary on athietes as New Zealand asked.
