All roads led to Rome where, unprecedent scenes of royal splendour characterised the royal marriage, which commenced at nine in the morning in Quirinal chapel. Four Kings and Queens, and sixty Princes and Princess witnessed the ceremonv.

Cardinal Maffi (Archbishop of Pisa) officiated. Vast multitudes before dawn thronged the approaches. Thousands of troops were station in the streets controlling the assemblage.

An hour before thej ceremony guests began to arrive. Among the earliest was the Duke of York, attired in naval full dress.

Ex-King Amanullah and his wife were also present. This was the first Royal marriage according to Lateran Treaty rules. Princess Marie Jose looked charming in a white velvet gown with a magnificent eight yards ermine embroidered train. The Crown Prince was handsomely uniformed, as an Infantry Colonel. After the Cardinal’s address, the Prince and Princess exchanged wedding rings. Immediately the ceremony was completed, bells pealed out in celebration of happy unison over the Eternal City, while thunderous salutes from guns boomed. Hie newly married couple were deafening cheering in triumphal drive over the flower and confetti strewn streets. Cardinal Merry Delval welcomed the bride and bridegroom to the Vatican city. The couple then returned to the Quirinal where the wedding breakfast was held. The Pope’s gift to Prince Umberto uas a magnificent tapestry depicting the wedding of the Holy Virgin. His gift to Princess Marie Jose was a gold rosary set with pearls.
