ASTOUNDING REPORT

STATEMENT BY HOSPITAL BOARD CHAIRMAN. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association. 1 HAMILTON, Jan. 9. Describing the position as astounding ami appalling, Mr W. Hill, of Rotorua drew attention to a confidential report recently received from the Health Department, at a meeting of Waikato Hospital Board to-day. Mr Hill said the returns showed a large proportion of immigrants over the past year, presumably nominated, were suffering from a. grave social disease, or were mentally deefctive. This was a state of faff airs that no Hospital Board should regard complacently.

It was decided to send a remit to the Hospital Board’s Conference, calling attention to the unsatisfactory conditions disclosed in the returns and stressing tne necessity for more stringent supervision of the physical and financial condition of immigrants. / ■
