Because its civil Exchequer is hard Up, Chicago recently dismissed five hundred police and a reign of robbery and violence has been tremendously accentuated. Sixty-seven burglaries have been reported during three hours early last evening.
In the style of the best bandit circles, five bandits thoroughly ransacked the residence of Charles Manton Richter. They had cut the telephone wires and one stood on guard while tlie other four spent an hour leisurely going through the house' securing five thousand sterling worth of plunder. Mrs Richter sportingly agreed to turn over her jewellery over to them if they would not alarm a boy and girl who had just been put to bed. The burglars entered into the spirit of tlie occasion by smiling pleasantly when a. hoy of eight came fiom his bedroom for a drink of water. “I am just an old college chum of your father’s,’’ said the leading bandit to the startled hid, who returned to his room satisfied.
