NEW YORK, November 21. 'l’lie sinn of £17,000 reposes safely in a battered safe at Brooklyn Navy Yard supply depot after tbe failure of one of tbe most audacious of attempted robberies. In the early hours to-day three motor-ears carrying gunmen drove up to the depot. Five men alighted and help up the man at the gate, while the three ears were driven into the yard are carefully parked. The gunmen, taking their prisoner with them, invaded one building where tne lieutenant of the day and six naval guards were sleeping. They dragged the officer out of bed and sent him and the guards, under escort, to another building. They were gagged and left under the care of a gangster guard. One of the gunmen found a man working in the boiler-room, to whom he said, “The admiral wants everyone in the building upstairs,” The boiiennan replied, “I am not allowed to leave this room.” ICC. KNOCKED OFT. “The admiral’s word is law,” answered the gunman, as he directed the boiiennan to the door with bis loaded revolver. The gunmen next knocked out a too curious policeman who looked in to learn if all was quiet in the depot. The safe proved to he a massive steel structure, fitted with a time combination lock, which defied every effort to open it. 'fbe gunmen laboured until daylight, using every device of burglars, even to dynamite. Daylight drove them from tlieir tusk and the money.
