BANK THEFT

OF ROLL OF NOTES,

[By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] DANNEVITiKE, Jan. 7. The unauthorised transfer of, approximately £l6O from the Dannevirke branch of the Commercial Bank to. some person at present unknown, took place this morning between 10.15 and 10.20. During the temporary absence at the rear, of the building of the teller Mr Gimblett some person entered the premises situated in the main thoroughfare opposite the Post Office and making the .most of his opportunity, walked out with'a roll of single notes' of the amount previously ' stated. The only other member of the staff was the manager, . R. Chisholm, (who was in his private office at the rear of the chamber V where the public business is trails- ,J acted and the money was in the teller's drawer of the inside of a four foot counter, the door of the grill being closed. The individual who made the daring theft had to open the door of the grill, reach over the counter and abstract the notes from the drawer. The manager hearing a noise came from his office and investigated, but saw no one but ■ a shadow' on the window dividing off the compartment' - where the- ledgers are kept. On Gimblett’s return he mentioned the incident and an investigation of the cash was immediately made and the loss of a bundle o f notes was discovered. The police are now busy.
