BYRD EXPEDITION
SHIPS LEAVING DUNEDIN. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN; Jan. 5. The Byrd Expedition ship, “City of New York,” sailed this afternoon for the 'lce Barrier,, which she should reach about January 17th. Owing to there , being a heavy south-west gale, it was deemed advisable to put in to Port Chalmers until the gale moderates.
It is expected that the vessel will leave at daybreak to-morrow (Monday)- . , The, Eleanor 'Bolling will sail about ■January 12th, and when the two vessels meet, about 1200 miles south, they .will proceed together through the ice pack. Both, vessels should reach, the Bay of VVhales about the end of January, where no time will be lost in embarking Commander Byr(] and, members of his expedition, .as it will be necessary for the ships to leave the Bay of Whales not later than the middle of February, v New ice will commence to form about the end of February, so that the ships must lose no time in making a start on the return voyage. If a good .passage is experienced through the ice field, they should arrive back in Dunedin about the second week in March.
The City of New York carries a crew of 28 all told, including a number of New Zealanders.
