SEVERE CYCLONE
SHIPPING CAUGHT UNAWARES. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 10 a.m.) BRISBANE, Jan. 6. A cyclone suddenly descended ou the Queensland coast yesterday catching shipping unawares. The steamer Morinda suffered the* full force of the gale arid hove to. The Kallatina arrived at Cooktowra from Thursday Island many hours; later. The passengers told a thrilling story of their experiences. Mourn- I tainous seas buffeted the ship all night and at one stage the position was so, serious that lifebuoys and lifebelts were issued to passengers and crew. To add to the danger the steering ap/parates failed and the vessel was. steered through the cyclone by temporary means. All along the coast shipping, was held up and telegrrjphic communication north of Townsville was interrupted.
