DISTINGUISHED VISITORS

On Saturday by the Christchurch Express, Viscount Craigavon, Premier of Northern Ireland, accompanied by Lady Craigavon, arrived on a visit to the Westland scenic resorts, and stayed at Keller’s Hotel.

In the evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry, 0.8. E.), Hon H. L. Michel, M.L.C., with Councillors Teichelmann and Evans, and the Town Clerk (Air H. G. Coles) paid an informal visit to the Premier, and extended a welcome to the visitors. Both Lord and Lady Craigavon expressed pleasure and gratification' at the call extended, and in the course of a general chat stated how much they were enjoying their stay in New Zealand. They were both looking forward to the trip to the glaciers. Originally the visit was not in their itinerary, bui when the Governor-Genral, Sir Charles; Fergusson, learned that the glacier • trip had been omitted, he strongly urged that time be made for .such a unique trip, and three clays were added to the South Island itinerary. The Premier’s party went south yesterday, Newman’s Motors Ltd. providing the transport.' To-day is to be spent on the Franz Josef, and to-mor-r'o the trip to Weheka and the Fox Glacier will be made. The party returns from Waiho to Greymouth on; Wednesday afternoon.

On Saturday evening Lady HoreRutbven, wife of Brigadier-General Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven, Governor of South Australia, also arrived, having motored from Arthur’s Pass over the Otira Gorge to Hokitika. Lady Ruthven joined the Premier’s party yesterday for the glaciers’ trip, and witlx the pleasant weather experienced no doubt ilie southern tour would be enjoyed greatly.
