WESTLAND TROTTING CLUB
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Tlie Westland Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday proved one of the most successful and enjoyable that has been liCid under its management. /I'he weather was perfect and the course in capital order, the use of two motor lorries with sprinklers enabling the dust nuisance to bei almost entirely removed. There was a large attendance and the fields were large, tho trotting bciing of a high class, and the various races well contested throughout the hanclicapper being successful in his efforts to bring the fields together and there were some line finishes. The totalisator returns total/ied £7750.1 as against £6064) last year, a very satisfactory increase of £I6BO for the day. The various officials werq attentive to their duties and the whole gathering passed off without the slightest hitch. ’The gate receipts showed a £2O increase as against last year. The Municipal Band was in attendance and. played an enjoyable programme. In the Aviation Handicap when near the distance post before the finish Mallaquin which was about fourth came down throwing his rider, but neither were injured- to any extent.
After the race for the Westland Trotting Club Handicap, the handsome silver cup presented by the Hokitika Licensed Victuallers was presented by Mr A. W. Keller, President of the Licensed Victuallers Association, who congratulated the owner on his success, and hoped he would bo. attracted again to the local meeting. Mr F. McGregor, President of the Trotting Club, joined in and congratulations which were extended to the trainer and driver on their fine victory.

Seven started. The winner led throughout .with Bingenwood next. Lady Bee laid third but dropped back at the finish and Flying Kate just got up to second place bn the post by a neck, the winner being three lengths in front. Time 3.1. Tote £949.

' The second time round Our Bingen led Osgood and Mountain Mist, the latter taking charge at the cutting and staving off a challenge by Avoness to win by a length. Frances de Oro led the field the first time past the stand but Idol Boy end Teremoa coming fast gained first and second places, the former being a length in front at the post, with third two lengths away. "When the stand vas reached Bingen Wilkes led from Royal Audubon and Great Epsom. Tne latter held the lead to the straight where Auto Minto came with a fast run, a fine finish resuling in a vin by a length, The Thistle two lengths away just in front of Flying Kate. Time 2.22 1-5. Tote £llß9£, the largest pool of the day.
