The Grovmouth Trotting Club meeting is taking place at Victoria Park and will be continued on Monday. The Public Trustee inserts a notice in this issue in reference to the estates of the late Patrick John Walsh of Mataiimi, and the late Mrs E. Partridge, of Hokitika. A maku shark, weighing 477 Tb. was caught recently by Mr Otto Sommer, a visitor to the deep-sea anglers’ camp, at Russell. The shark was the largest caught this season. Mr Sommer was ’fishing from the launch Otehei, it being his first day out. The shark broached several times, and two and a-half hours were occupied in landing it. The death occurred at Westport on New Year’s Eve of Mrs Kissell, wife of Mr William Kissell. She- was visiting friends, and suddenly dropped dead. The late Mrs Kissell was horn in Nelson and had resided in Westport for 49 years. She leaves a husband and three sons, and seven grandchildren; also five sisters, Mrs Bevan (Westport), Airs Gemmell (Nelson), Misses Scott (2), and another sister in Wanganui, and one brother, Mr G. Scott of Wellington. An inquest was held yesterday, a verdict of heart failure being returned. Tlie Magistrate of New Plymouth, in his efforts to teach intoxicated motorists the error of their ways, has announced his determination to give every convicted delinquent “a kind of deferred imprisonment,” that is, to place the offenders on probation. His experience (says the “New Zealand Herald”) appears to justify the drastic and general imposition of this sentence, no matter what else may he suffered by way of penalty. Tt will be remembered that some other Magistrates, having found the exaction of a fine ineffective, have sent, certain offenders to gaol. For regarding the offence ns serious there is ample warranty and motorists generally, as part of the needing to be protected from the driver muddled or elated with liquor, will approve this view. After yesterday’s fine day, heavy rain and a strong southerly gale set in last night and continued until'the early morning, when the weather noderaied somewhat though the day is squally.

Ten Naylor, a Westport Post Office messenger hoy, who was out at 5 a.in. clearing the, mail boxes on New Voar’s Pay was found lying unconscious along side of his bicycle on tho road close to the Post Office'by Mr Lester, who had gone out to see if there was any sign of Naylor. An examination showed that the latter had broken a collar hone.

The marriage was celebrated at St. John’s Church Westport on New Year’s morning of Elsie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J. H. Pate, Brougham street, to William Robert, eldest son of Mrs and the late' Thomas McKenzie. The Rev. W. J. Bloycc was the officiating clergyman. Mr and Mrs McKenzie l,e!ft later by car for Christchurch cn route to Dunedin, whero tho honeymoon is to bo spent.

While driving alone from Greymouth* on the road near Goldsborough, Mr B. E. Older had the misfortune to have the accelerator of his car jammed, and the vehicle ran off the road into a

paddock, where .it came against the stump of a tree, and ’overturned on its side. Mr Older fortunautely received only slight cuts and abrasions, but the car was damaged about tho radiator, the bumper was torn off, and the windscreen and rear mudguard broken.

There was a holiday attendance at the Soldiers’ Hall last night for the first public dance of the New Year. The oca&iou was a benefit for the new building fund, and the surplus derived is a very acceptable contribution towards the amount required to be raised. Very’enjoyable music was supplied by the Blank- Hand orchestra under M r A. Lawn’s distinguished leadership. Numerous encores were demanded throughout the night, and the proceedings closed on a very happy note. Misses R. Jacobs and Blake supplied extras ail of which were received most acceptably. Misses Stapleton (2) and Hall of the Hockey Club conducted the soft drinks buffet, and handed over the proceeds to the R.S.A. fund. The event was a pleasant inauguration of a series of benefits to be conducted during the next few months in aid 6f the new hall and completion fund. Particulars of other events will he detailed later. The R.S.A. committee desires to thank all who contributed last night to the very pleasant and successful evening".
