BIG GAME FISHING
ENGLISH ANGLER’S VIEWS
AUCKLAND, Dec. 31
Keen to enjoy another season of big game fishing in northern waters, Mi C. Alnrn Baker, the noted English sportsman, arrived-at Auckland by the Muungantii, “ Interest in New Zealand’s spoiling attractions is growing all over the world,” said Mr Baker. “Fishermen are beginning to hear more of the wonders of tho Bay of Islands, but further intensive publicity is needed. Again the sport must be made attractive for the large class of wealthy people who wish to bring their wives and families with them, and who want and are prepared to pay if or the best available accommodafiion. 01 course, there are many anglers who are perfectly satisfied with fishing camps, hut first class accommodation will build up the tourist trade enormously. New Zealand can hardly realise what a great heritage it possesses in its deep sea. fishing grounds. Every effort should he made to develop them and every care should be taken to see that supplies of good fish are not exhausted. The Government would he taking a wise action if it were to prohibit trawling and netting round the fishing areas. Any loss that might result from this action would he more than compensated by tiro value of the tourist traffic. With proper care this can lie made a source of great revenue to the country. Znne Gray intended to organise an expedition to New Zealand and Australian waters in 1931.” After fishing in New Zealand Mr Baker said he would go on to Australia at the express invitation of the Commonwealth Government. Later he would cruise round New Guinea and the islands.
