1929 RECORD YEAR

(United Press Association —By Electric • Telegraph.—Copyright.)

AVASHINGTON, January 1

The Department of Commerce has reported record-breaking forcing trade figures for the past year, even surpassing the shipments during and immediately after the war. Both exports and imports were well in excess of the preceding year, and the United States closes 1929 with a favourable' trade balance of nearly one thousand million dollars. The gain in the export trade however, was confined to the first four months of the year, after which it showed an actual decrease compared with 1928.

AUSTRALASIA GOOD CUSTOMER

AVASHTNGTON, January 1

The United States Chamber of Commerce, analysing America’s foreign trade for the first nine mouths of 1929 says: “The exports to Australia, our seventh best customer, totalled 115,139,000 dollars, being 11.33 per cent, larger than for the similar period in 1928. This, in part, is ascribable to the heavy purchases made of motor lorries and petroleum products. New Zealand’s imports of United States products increased by 2,867,000 dollars, or by 10.6 per cent.
